Sundance London (2019)

The pick of US indie films come to Sundance London at Picturehouse Central

Celebrating the theme Risk Independence, this year’s Sundance London from 29 May to 2 June showcases fearless filmmaking with a diverse line-up of innovative cinema that challenges convention and questions the status quo.

Here are some highlights

  • Mindy Kaling writes and stars in opening night film, LATE NIGHT (dir. Nisha Ganatra, Transparent), featuring Emma Thompson as a legendary talk-show host who hires Kaling as the sole woman in her writers’ room to help save her career.
  • The Closing night film is the brilliant documentary HAIL SATAN? which traces the rise of America’s most controversial religious movement, The Satanic Temple.
  • Striking revenge drama, The NightingaleAustralian writer-director Jennifer Kent’s much-anticipated follow-up to her critically acclaimed horror debut, The Babadook.
     
  • Akwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8) shines in her debut leading role in The Farewell, directed by Lulu Wang.
  • After the Wedding  Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams star in Bart Freundlich’s female-driven reimagining of Susanne Bier’s Danish film of the same name. 
  • Londoner Sam Bain (Peep Show, Four Lions) writes CORPORATE ANIMALS, a comedy horror starring Demi Moore and Ed Helms.
  • Directed by Sophie Hyde and written by Brit Emma Jane Unsworth, ANIMALS stars UK actress Holliday Grainger and American comedy favourite Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development, Transparent)  in this unpredictable tale of female friendship.

 

  • Directed by Shola Amoo, The Last Tree stars Sam Adewunmi as Femi, a British boy of Nigerian heritage who, after a happy childhood in rural Lincolnshire, moves to inner London to live with his mum. Struggling with the unfamiliar culture and values of his new environment, teenage Femi has to figure out which path to adulthood he wants to take.
