CAUTION: Here be spoilers

Sacha Baron Cohen’s inspired comic creation Borat is now so recognisable worldwide that in his latest outing as Borat in the US he had to disguise himself on top of his original disguise. And he was joined by a new character, his teenage daughter tutar (brilliantly played by newcomer Maria Bakalova).

In his character as Kazakhstan’s fourth-best journalist, Baron Cohen is released from prison in Kazakhstan and is sent to America to deliver a personal gift to President Trump. As a variety of characters, he pushes ordinary, unsuspecting Americans, the main cast of the film, to see what extreme opinions they will accept, and to reveal what outrageous beliefs they hold. It’s cringe-making, rather worrying – and very funny.

Buying a cage in a hardware shop to keep his daughter in? OK, says the owner. Asking in a clinic for an abortion for his daughter after he says they had sex? The fixed smiles may waver a bit at that but the polite American veneer doesn’t falter. And dressing as Trump in a fat suit and latex mask to disrupt and outrage a Republican convention in the middle of Mike Pence’s speech? Well, he survived alive. You have to admire the bravery of both of them given the genuine risks they take. Also their acting prowess and Baron Cohen’s mimicry, as he has the Trump graceless stomp down to a convincing T.

Baron Cohen and Bakalova are fearless, whether scripted and improvised. Particularly so in their dangerous (gone viral) hotel-bedroom encounter with a would-be lascivious Rudi Guiliani (for which the ex-mayor has just earned a Razzie) that ended in real life with them having to flee his security detail.

You know Borat. You know what to expect. This film will exceed your expectations. Make the most of it as it may have to be Borat’s last outing, says Baron Cohen.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm has been nominated for two Oscars and is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Also see the trailer below for the yet-to-be-released previously unseen Borat Supplemental Reportings Retrieved From Floor of Stable Containing Editing Machine. Scenes expanded on in the trailer include Borat’s (Sacha Baron Cohen) time at a make-up store with his daughter, Tutar (Maria Bakalova), his stay in a cabin owned by conspiracy theorists during the Covid-19 pandemic, and his pilgrimage to the far-right rally, where he sings the Oscar-shortlisted ‘Wuhan Flu’.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is available on demand from Amazon Prime. So far it has received 20 award nominations and numerous awards. Enjoy.
