Cannes Film Festival 2022 Day 7

Competition

LES AMANDIERS (FOREVER YOUNG)23 directed by VALERIA BRUNI TEDESCHI
HOLY SPIDER (LES NUITS DE MASHHAD) directed by ALI ABBASI
HEOJIL KYOLSHIM (DECISION TO LEAVE) directed by PARK CHAN-WOOK

Decision to Leave sees an insomniac detective in Busan form an intimate bond with a beguiling murder subject of his latest case and leaves the viewer off balance at every turn. It’s a gorgeous and grippingly made black-widow noir romance, featuring a glorious leading turn from the Chinese star Tang Wei.

CRIMES OF THE FUTURE (LES CRIMES DU FUTUR)  directed by DAVID CRONENBERG

It’s a piece which is deliberate, but not sterile; disturbing, but too grounded in reality to be truly frightening, even though it attempts to blend the fears of body horror with climate change. It’s pure, essential Cronenberg.

Premiere

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF DESTRUCTION (L’HISTOIRE NATURELLE DE LA DESTRUCTION) directed by SERGEI LOZNITSA
ALL THAT BREATHES directed by SHAUNAK SEN
NOS FRANGINS (OUR BROTHERS) directed by RACHID BOUCHAREB
MOONAGE DAYDREAM directed by BRETT MORGEN

For his feature documentary, Brett Morgen takes a more impressionistic approach, exploring the Bowie persona as a composite creation, a chameleonic alien who shrugged o$ the enigma to engage with the world as himself only in the last two decades of his life. It’s a glorious celebratory montage of archive material, live performance footage, Bowie’s own experimental video art and paintings, movie and stage work.
